Awhile back we told you about G4's OpenSource, a Q&A session between G4 viewers and G4's CEO, Neal Tiles. Well the first wave of questions are in, including one from myself, but they all pretty much asked the same thing: Why is G4 giving up on 24/7 tech and gaming?
The answer is long and complicated, but here's some excerpts from Mr. Tiles' response.
"Let me preface all of my comments on these types of questions by saying that G4, and TechTV before it, has never been watched more than it is right now…since shifting away from an "all videogame" format…the network has realized huge ratings gains and web, VOD and podcasting traffic."
"Truth is/was… "videogame TV" or "videogame only" programming was not working...while all of you reading this certainly were passionate about the old G4…there simply was not enough of you watching to make "videogame only" a sustainable and profitable business."
"…we want G4 to be "TV for the Xbox/YouTube/iPod generation" (I use Xbox as a metaphor…I could have easily used PS3 too…so chill out Sony fanboys). Is that Spike? I don’t think so."
"Now will every show on G4 be tech, videogame, web-related, etc? While I wish it could, it’s unfortunately not possible in order to grow the network…we need to balance what will define us vs. what has mass appeal…because, first and foremost, we are a business and not a "public service."
"HBO defines itself as "anti TV" via "it’s not TV, it’s HBO"…but still derives a big portion of its viewership from re-airing movies. FX is dominated by re-runs of That 70’s Show, and, until recently, Married With Children and movies…However, both use originals to define themselves…but both also use acquired programming to generate the ratings needed to stay profitable…same for Adult Swim (Aqua Teen but also Family Guy), Comedy Central (The Daily Show but also Scrubs) and Spike (UFC but also CSI)."
"So while G4 has changed a lot…unfortunately we are not able to be a 24/7 all gaming channel anymore…But, I’d like to point out that we still have far more videogame programming each and every day than any other network…"
Tiles makes quite a speech, you can read it all at the link below, but basically the entire point is this: Videogame/Technology television playing 24/7 was not profitable. G4 had to broaden itself in order to appeal to more viewers and in order to continue to stay in business. This meant getting COPS (which is still the highest rated show on G4), Cheaters, JKX and so on in order to fund shows like AOTS and X-Play.
