Christmas came a bit early as we get G4 president's Open Source article a few days early.

A long article this month means no user-submitted questions, but plenty of good news. You can read the whole thing here, but here's a quick bullet point list of what's going on:

E3 coverage = 23 hours (see our E3 on G4 post)

Recaps of the 2M in 2 Months and Web Soup announcements

G4 Rewind return it aien't, but older episodes of X-Play from 2007-on will begin airing

G4TV.com is getting an overhaul, now more gaming oriented (it's a beta!)

There's a section of Open Source from Josh Krane (Senior VP of Interactive and New Media) who talks about how gaming has done well on G4's site and the changes they're making to bring that front and center. This is phase 1 and there's several more phases to go through, included a rather vague reference to a feature coming that well let users influence the news on the site. Could it be the community pages announced on the site's forums a few months back?

-KnuxSonic

E3 (the REAL one) is finally back after taking a few years off and while the majority of us STILL can't get in, G4 is once again the official broadcaster and will be attempting simulate the experience as best possible via a 2D screen with stereo sound (i.e. your TV).

Here's a rundown of G4's E3 2009 coverage (all times EST):

Monday, June 1

1PM: Microsoft Press Conference (COMMERCIAL FREE), followed by post-show roundtable and interview with MS's Shane Kim.

4:30PM: EA and Ubisoft Press Conference

5:30PM - 10PM: AOTS/X-Play E3 discussion, hands-on demos of DJ Hero, Bayonetta and Alpha Protocol, various other interviews and spotlights.

10PM: King of Kong (if you haven't seen it yet, set your friggin' DVR!)

12AM: Revenge of the Nerds (again, DVR!)

Tuesday, June 2

11AM: Nintendo & Sony Press Conferences (COMMERCIAL FREE)

12PM - 4PM: Roundtable discussion, interviews with Reggie Fils-Amie and Jack Tretton

Sometime between 12PM and 9PM: Steve Weibe attempts Donkey Kong record, hands-on demos of God of War III and Heavy Rain, previews of Modern Warfare 2, Halo: ODST, Assassins Creed 2 and Brutal Legend.

9PM: Premiere of Web Soup w/ Chris Hardwick

12AM: Replay of previous E3 09 Coverage

Wednesday, June 3

9AM: Replay of previous E3 09 Coverage

6PM - 9PM: Regular AOTS/X-Play show floor coverage, interviews & discussion. Hands on demos of FFXIII, Fight Night 4 and Lost Planet 2.

12AM: Replay of previous E3 09 Coverage

Thursday, June 4

6PM - 9PM: Last day from Show Floor. AOTS/X-Play show floor coverage, interviews & discussion. Hands-on demos of Tony Hawk: The Ride, Mafia 2 and Ratchet and Clank.

All in all, it pretty much means you need to clear up space on your schedule or your DVR. Not sure if they're doing a wrap up on Friday or not, but either way it's plenty of coverage for what is probably going to be a BIG year for E3 announcements.

Last week G4 announced a new original show "Web Soup" via their website and it looks like this week is a repeat as they announce "2 Months, $2 Million," a new original show (or "docu-series" as they call it) about 4 smart guys trying to get rich playing poker online.

Is G4 just cashing in on the poker craze or do is a real and interesting documentary in the cards? Haha!

The series will begin airing in August. Read the full story here.

G4 Rewind is back online after a short hiatus, albeit we seemed to leave the interwebs just as some important things in the G4 Universe fired up. Let's review!

May Open Source
Neal Tiles' May column talked about why G4 Rewind aired in the wee hours of the morning instead of primetime, nixed ideas of third season of Code Monkeys (for now) and clears up why G4 Canada is vastly different from G4 USA.

You can read his full column here.

New Show: Web Soup

G4 announced a new ORIGINAL show this week called "Web Soup." Modeled after E!'s "The Soup," the new show will be hosted by AOTS tech guy and occasional co-host Chris Hardwick and will basically expand the "Around the Net" concept into a half-hour affair, with viral, homemade and just plain weird videos from the internet with commentary by Hardwick. The show kicks off June 7th.

G4 Rewind site redesign

The new design is still being built but will be ready soon enough. Pretty much every single show page is being updated so it's taking awhile. Hope you like white and orange!

While the episodes are missing Tommy Tallarico (whose still busy with Video Games Live (possibly forever)), they are still well produced and feature guest hosts who, along with Victor Lucas, do a great job of debating and discussing and reviewing games.

Alas, there's still no place on American airwaves to catch either EP or RotR, but at least there is now an official spot to catch them online.

This month Tiles discusses the changes at X-Play and AOTS, G4 Underground, Ninja Warrior Challenge 4 and... what?! G4 Rewind talk?! Turn that s&%$ up!

"At this point, unfortunately, the answer is no. The reason isn't so much the cost of programming but, rather, the lack of ratings we would anticipate it to generate. It did well at first last summer but then dropped off rather sharply. We need to maximize every part of our schedule and we simply have other options that we can air that will perform better than older G4 shows...but I'm glad we tried it."

Aw shucks.

Other highlights include COPS and Cheaters topping the ratings charts, again. WRRRRY!

It looks like the first lady of "The Feed" will be heading into the sunset. Layla Kayleigh, who has been with the network for nearly 3 years will be exiting in the next month or so. She posted the news to her MySpace blog.

"After 3 incredible years I will be leaving G4 and not be doing The feed anymore.
I can't tell you how bittersweet it is for me. Bitter because I will miss YOU. The ones that have supported me, watched me grow, tuned in daily to show me love and get all the news you need to know ;) I will miss all the people I work with, that I have known to grow and love, that have known me since the first day I stepped on that stage and had no idea what I was doing! but they were patient, saw how hungry I was and gave me a hand without me even asking for one."

She will be replaced by Allison Haislip, who has done a variety of work for G4 including filling in for The Feed when Kayleigh was absent, as well as the G4 Tech News Countdown podcast and filling in various spots on Attack of the Show.

Thanks to RonMav for finding the story.

RonMaverick804 from our forums has dug up some exciting news on Scot Rubin's All Games coming to TV.

Ron writes:

I was checking my facebook and i got this in my inbox!

Scott:
"I opened up a thread for suggestion on what an All Games tv show should include. AGI was a live 3 hour talk show and we will only have 30 minutes or so this time around.
We've got lots of ideas and don't want to duplicate the shows that Geoff and Sess do, so we're trying to think a bit out of the box.
Would love your thoughts"

Proof:

AGI facebook group:
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?v=feed&id=744215401#/group.php?gid=19049540312

Let the speculation begin! We first heard of All Games perhaps hooking up with DirecTV last month, so my first guess would be on there.

In case you've been living under a rock (or have a life), All Games is/was the pre-cursor to G4TV, which was revived after by Scot Rubin after he departed G4. Rubin ran a daily live show for several years before quitting to work for the now-defunct Championship Gaming League.

As always, we'll keep our eyes/ears on the ground for more details. Thanks to RonMav for finding the story!

In a rather shocking news article posted to Kotaku, G4 has decided to slash production schedules at Attack of the Show and X-Play, which will result in some layoffs which could be as high as HALF the X-Play staff. X-Play will drop to 3 days a week, while AOTS returns to 4 days a week, a far cry from Neal Tiles' previous goal of 7-days a week of 60 minute X-Play.

The story was originally broke via Twitter when an employee tweeted the news.

Certainly not what we were hoping from G4 to start out 2009, it seems not even Hollywood is recession proof. Tough times all around.

Come discuss the news with us in our forums.

The channel's website now redirects to one of the few remaining VOOM HD channels that survived, "Rush HD" a channel dedicated to action sports. Did anyone actually get to watch GamePlayHD before it's demise?

This is a week late, but I thought I ought to mention that GTTV is back from their break with a new season with Geoff Keighly at the helm. This is technically season 2 of GTTV, but will be the sixth season if you count GameHead which GameTrailers TV's precursor.

Here's a preview of Friday, Feb. 6th's show (which is actually the 2nd ep. of the season):
Peace and Prosperity Be Damned! On Friday, February 6th, GAMETRAILERS TV
WITH GEOFF KEIGHLEY presents the world exclusive first look at a
groundbreaking new piece of video game content: THE LOST AND DAMNED, the
first downloadable episode ("dle") for GRAND THEFT AUTO IV. Arriving
exclusively for Xbox 360 on Tuesday, February 17th, THE LOST AND DAMNED sets
a new standard by delivering a robust single player storyline that
intersects with the plot of GRAND THEFT AUTO IV.

Same time (1AM EST) same place (SpikeTV).

Sounds like G4 is battening down the hatches for 2009, it will be interesting to see which direction they take to stop their ratings slide. It sounds like they'll be looking at original content again instead of acquiring outside shows (w00t!).
