About Championship Gaming Series

Status: Cancelled, Not Airing

Championship Gaming Series was the first and only worldwide professional video gaming league. 18 teams of the world’s best gamers from North America, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia competed for over $1,000,000 and the title of World Champion in this mini-series broadcasted during E3 2008 on G4.

History

The CGS was founded as a joint effort by DirecTV, British Sky Broadcast and (Asian) STAR TV in 2007 and featured teams of professional gamers from every continent on Earth (sans Antarctica). G4 aired the second season of the tournament after it’s E3 2008 coverage in July. The show was shot ESPN style, with commentators, a studio crowd and coaches for the teams. Shortly after the second season ended, the CGS was dissolved, due to lack of ratings and funding issues.

BTW!

  • Former G4 host Scot Rubin began working for the CGS shortly after season 2 aired on G4 (and shortly before it’s shutdown).
