Open Source June: E3, Classic X-Play, New G4tv.com

Christmas came a bit early as we get G4 president's Open Source article a few days early.

A long article this month means no user-submitted questions, but plenty of good news. You can read the whole thing here, but here's a quick bullet point list of what's going on:

  • E3 coverage = 23 hours (see our E3 on G4 post)
  • Recaps of the 2M in 2 Months and Web Soup announcements
  • G4 Rewind return it aien't, but older episodes of X-Play from 2007-on will begin airing
  • G4TV.com is getting an overhaul, now more gaming oriented (it's a beta!)
There's a section of Open Source from Josh Krane (Senior VP of Interactive and New Media) who talks about how gaming has done well on G4's site and the changes they're making to bring that front and center. This is phase 1 and there's several more phases to go through, included a rather vague reference to a feature coming that well let users influence the news on the site. Could it be the community pages announced on the site's forums a few months back?

E3 2009 on G4

e32009.jpg

E3 (the REAL one) is finally back after taking a few years off and while the majority of us STILL can't get in, G4 is once again the official broadcaster and will be attempting simulate the experience as best possible via a 2D screen with stereo sound (i.e. your TV).

Here's a rundown of G4's E3 2009 coverage (all times EST):

Monday, June 1

1PM: Microsoft Press Conference (COMMERCIAL FREE), followed by post-show roundtable and interview with MS's Shane Kim.

4:30PM: EA and Ubisoft Press Conference

5:30PM - 10PM: AOTS/X-Play E3 discussion, hands-on demos of DJ Hero, Bayonetta and Alpha Protocol, various other interviews and spotlights.

10PM: King of Kong (if you haven't seen it yet, set your friggin' DVR!)

12AM: Revenge of the Nerds (again, DVR!)

Tuesday, June 2

11AM: Nintendo & Sony Press Conferences (COMMERCIAL FREE)

12PM - 4PM: Roundtable discussion, interviews with Reggie Fils-Amie and Jack Tretton

Sometime between 12PM and 9PM: Steve Weibe attempts Donkey Kong record, hands-on demos of God of War III and Heavy Rain, previews of Modern Warfare 2, Halo: ODST, Assassins Creed 2 and Brutal Legend.

9PM: Premiere of Web Soup w/ Chris Hardwick

12AM: Replay of previous E3 09 Coverage

Wednesday, June 3

9AM: Replay of previous E3 09 Coverage

6PM - 9PM: Regular AOTS/X-Play show floor coverage, interviews & discussion. Hands on demos of FFXIII, Fight Night 4 and Lost Planet 2.

12AM: Replay of previous E3 09 Coverage

Thursday, June 4

6PM - 9PM: Last day from Show Floor. AOTS/X-Play show floor coverage, interviews & discussion. Hands-on demos of Tony Hawk: The Ride, Mafia 2 and Ratchet and Clank.

All in all, it pretty much means you need to clear up space on your schedule or your DVR. Not sure if they're doing a wrap up on Friday or not, but either way it's plenty of coverage for what is probably going to be a BIG year for E3 announcements.

G4 shows it's Poker Face

lolwut.jpg

Last week G4 announced a new original show "Web Soup" via their website and it looks like this week is a repeat as they announce "2 Months, $2 Million," a new original show (or "docu-series" as they call it) about 4 smart guys trying to get rich playing poker online.

Is G4 just cashing in on the poker craze or do is a real and interesting documentary in the cards? Haha!

The series will begin airing in August. Read the full story here.

While we were out...

G4 Rewind is back online after a short hiatus, albeit we seemed to leave the interwebs just as some important things in the G4 Universe fired up. Let's review!

May Open Source
Neal Tiles' May column talked about why G4 Rewind aired in the wee hours of the morning instead of primetime, nixed ideas of third season of Code Monkeys (for now) and clears up why G4 Canada is vastly different from G4 USA.

You can read his full column here.

New Show: Web Soup

G4 announced a new ORIGINAL show this week called "Web Soup." Modeled after E!'s "The Soup," the new show will be hosted by AOTS tech guy and occasional co-host Chris Hardwick and will basically expand the "Around the Net" concept into a half-hour affair, with viral, homemade and just plain weird videos from the internet with commentary by Hardwick. The show kicks off June 7th.

G4 Rewind site redesign

The new design is still being built but will be ready soon enough. Pretty much every single show page is being updated so it's taking awhile. Hope you like white and orange!
