G-Day II: TV 4 Gamers Returns

savepoken.jpg

On May 28th, 2004, gaming network G4 and tech-centric channel TechTV entered into what many now consider an unholy, evil union that took the best elements of both networks and smashed them before our big, teary fanboy eyes.

Okay, so it didn't really happen that fast, it was more of a gradual, methodical smashing, but nonetheless, this day that many of us hold in infamy, referred to as "G-Day" by the network, is generally considered the point where "it all went wrong." Over the next few months (and years), we saw our favorite shows canceled or retooled, our favorite personalities quit or laid off and of course the coup de grâce, the total disappearance of Po-Ken the Panda.

We ranted, we cursed, we bitched and moaned... I think someone key'd Neal Tiles' car... but G4 remained silent and continued it's march into... wherever it was marching to at the time. Many (see: the sane ones) gave in and instead found new homes in host spinoff sites (Revision3, TWiT, All Games, etc.) while some (see: the less than sane ones, including myself) continued the "Great Bitchin-ing" in hopes that someday their moans of sorrow would be heard.

Tomorrow, G4 finally acknowledges our moans... erm... actually pleas, pleas sounds better. Tomorrow G4 finally acknowledges our pleas, either out of the kindness of their hearts or perhaps their bulging spam inboxes could take no more. Regardless of reason, they're finally listening and who knows for how long. This is the chance we've all been waiting for, the chance to prove that we, as gamers, are a relevant and more importantly (to TV networks) a profitable audience.

Yes, it's just a block of half-decade old gaming shows, but it's also an opportunity. A foot in the door. We say we're tired of COPS, Totally Outrageous Behavior and Cheaters, but in reality, money talks, BS walks. It's put up or shut up time, prove to G4 that gaming content is viable and gaming content WILL come back. Miss out... and we prove their previous point that gaming TV does not work.

This is OUR G-Day. "TV 4 Gamers" is back, but for how long? Well, that's up to us. Tell your friends, co-workers and strangers. If you don't have G4 or if it's been moved to a more expensive tier, do what comes natural to us and bitch to your cable company!

No matter what happens, though, enjoy the nostalgia of all the classics, relive your favorite shows, laugh through my terrible acting, interact through Stickam or chat, and maybe... just maybe... we'll get our way. See you Monday, bright and early!

About Time: G4 comes to Xbox Live Marketplace

For awhile now Microsoft's Xbox Live service has been offering clips and full episodes of various TV shows and you would think G4 would be a perfect fit, but alas, nothing from the network that's plugged in has shown up on the console that's plugged in... until today!

G4 announced today that they have reached an agreement with Microsoft to begin posting full-length episodes on the service starting with a special sneak preview of Code Monkeys Season 2. The only other shows to be added so far are The Block and Attack of the Show.

Full press release is after the jump.

G4 ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH MICROSOFT TO OFFER POPULAR PROGRAMMING ON XBOX 360

Free Sneak Preview of "Code Monkeys" Season Two Available for Download on Xbox LIVE Video Store in Advance of Television Debut

Los Angeles, CA, May 27, 2008 - G4, the multi-media destination that feeds young guy's addiction for the latest technology, web culture, animation and video games, announced today that the network has teamed up with Microsoft to offer a selection of its popular series on Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. Shows available for download immediately are animated comedy series "Code Monkeys," including a free sneak preview of season two, snowboarder reality series "The Block" and a special weekly episode of "Attack of the Show." The agreement marks the first time that G4's content has been made available for download on a gaming console.

"G4 is a natural fit to be part of the Xbox LIVE community. Our young male audience spends more time interfacing with technology than any other network," said Neal Tiles, President, G4. "This partnership underscores G4's commitment to bringing relevant and authentic content to young guys in more ways than ever before."

"G4 is one of the industry leaders for gaming and entertainment content and we are thrilled to offer its shows on the Xbox LIVE Video Store," said Ross Honey, senior director of the media and entertainment group, Microsoft. "We're sure the Xbox LIVE community is going to jump at the chance to download G4 shows, especially the never before seen free episode of Code Monkeys."

Episodes from the following G4 series are available for download now at the Xbox LIVE Video Store:

"Code Monkeys" - G4's hit animated comedy of 8-bit proportions centers around GameAvision, a 1980's videogame company, and the misadventures of its staff whose crazy antics ascend any of their own video creations. Creator Adam de la Peña ("The Man Show," "Crank Yankers") sends the rowdy staff on side-splitting adventures that parody the golden age of videogames, including cameos of industry icons who help them along the way. Season two of "Code Monkey" debuts June 1 on G4 but a new episode is available for download now at the Xbox LIVE Video Store.

"The Block" - This reality series, currently in its second season, gives viewers a free lift ticket inside the world of hard-core snowboarders. The series is filmed at the world's only hotels run by and for snowboarders and offers a candid look at the insanity of "The Block," where the action behind the front desk is only topped by what happens on the slopes. It's up to the hotel's owners, pro-snowboarding icon Marc Frank Montoya and hotel entrepreneur Liko Smith, to balance the company and the craziness to make sure guests live in true rock-star style. Season one of the series takes place in Lake Tahoe and season two goes to the hotel's branch in Big Bear, CA.

"Attack of the Show" - G4 brings viewers an irreverent interactive daily live trip to the digital water cooler with reports on the latest hot topics and breaking news, including non-mainstream guests and in-depth coverage of events such as CES, E3, GDC, SXSW and Comic-Con. Hosted by Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn, "Attack of the Show" takes viewers inside, underneath, around and behind tech, games, Internet culture, comic books, sports, gadgets and more. A special weekly episode, created exclusively for Xbox users, will be made available for download each week.

Didn't Make the Cut: Game Grub

So with just 7 days until G4 Rewind begins on the slightly-larger-than-an-embedded-flash-player-but-still-fairly-small-screen, I'm going to look back at a few shows that didn't make the TV cut.

Our first entry is a show that is near and dear to many gamers hearts, one that is not only educational, but entertaining and delicious.

Yessir, that's some Game Grub! Only a few very short episodes were produced and I have NO idea where G4 found these guys, but it's a travesty that G4 did not dedicate a full length show to these two. Oh well, perhaps somewhere in an alternate timeline, there is an entire network dedicated to gaming related baked treats.

Thanks to forum member twister111 for digging the video up!

This Week on X-Play/GameTrailers TV (5/16)

Okay so I figured I'll post a week recap of X-Play then a preview of tonights GTTV. Sounds fair, amirite? BTW, there is no X-Play tonight, due to NinjaFest 2, so yeah.

X-Play Recap - Monday thru Friday @ 8PM EST on G4TV:

-Cliff y B Interview on Gears of War 2
-All Access: Mirror's Edge
-Wii Fit Review
-The Agency Exclusive Trailer

GameTrailers TV - Saturday at 1AM EST on SpikeTV:

Turn out the lights and hide the children as GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley takes you inside EA Redwood Shores for an in-depth look at the upcoming sci-fi thriller Dead Space. See a brand new trailer for the game and witness never-before-seen footage as we shed some light on the zero-G environments, brutal weapons and horrific enemies that lurk around every corner (did we mention that it was bloody?).

Plus, we debut the world’s first game play trailer from the highly anticipated Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Amanda MacKay buckles up for a real life drifting session with the team behind GRID and Daniel Kayser goes one-on-one with NFL legend and Madden NFL 09 cover athlete Brett Favre.

Thanks to G4's Kristina Levsky and GTTV's Jeremy Hoffmann for sending these in.

Dave Meinstein penning "Cereal Heroes" movie

After years of secrecy, Portal creator/writer/star Dave Meinstein has finally shed some light on his new project called "Cereal Heroes," a action/comedy animated movie set to release in 2010. Here's the summary from Forbes:

"The story follows the adventures of cartoon cereal-box-mascots who are mistakenly brought to life when a plan to replace the world's fallen superheroes with characters from comic books goes awry. These unlikely "Cereal Heroes" with ridiculous powers soon find themselves alone and on the run in an unfamiliar world that only they can save from certain destruction."

While it may not be Portal: The Movie, it certainly sounds like it has some elements that Portal fans loved (quirky humor, odd characters, etc.). The article also has a little writeup on Dave and Portal:

"Writer David Meinstein optioned the property to Fable Works in 2007 and is writing the screenplay. Meinstein is best known for his work as writer and producer of the fan-favorite G4 Television program, "Portal.""

Major congrats to Dave on hitting it big!

New Show: G4 Tech News Countdown

Who accidentally mixed tech in my G4? I don't know who it was, but the new G4 Tech News Countdown is a new entry in G4's growing online lineup that counts down the five top technology-related stories of the week. It's hosted by Alison Haislip, who's been filling in on The Feed for some time. While it's not exactly the second coming of TechTV, It does have that flavor in there. Let's hope this makes it to TV in some form as well. New episodes are posted every Friday.

Big News: G4 teams up with G4 Rewind to bring back Classic G4!

In case you didn't read the news today on G4tv.com, G4 has announced a new summer block to air every weekday which will consist of nothing but classic G4 shows! This is HUGE news for us as fans, but even bigger in that we have a chance to show G4 what we really loved about G4 of yore and perhaps even impact future programming.

Seeing as this is a block for the fans, it's also going to be BY the fans as G4 is also teaming up with myself and G4 Rewind to host the block, which will air starting June 2nd from 9AM to Noon. This means I'll be working directly with G4 on the block as well as helping with Video Viewer Mail and the Virtual Audience segments.

Over the years I've been following G4, I've posted a lot of negative things about how the network was run... and I'm not retracting any those now that I'm working there, but I will say that this is a great, positive step for G4. What other TV network would give up an entire block of programing to the fans? I certainly can't think of any. I'll be posting more details as they come out, but join the discussion now either in our forums or G4's. As I said, this is a block about the fans so we want and NEED your input!

Thanks to everyone who's supported G4 Rewind over the past 3 years and I'd like to welcome all the new people who are probably visiting for the first time! Here's to a great nostalgia-filled summer!
