What have they done? E3 is over and gamers everywhere sigh a collective "meh" as the convention was a shadow of it's former self. While most journalists agreed it was much easier to navigate, few agreed it was "better." No megatons, no killer apps... really just a bunch of pretty decent games.
As for G4, they even packed it up early and went back to the studio on day 3. Their coverage made E3 LOOK much better than it actually was, even being called out by their own Victor Lucas in "The Loop." Engadget also reported that G4's booth space was probably larger than Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft's space combined. And with many games being spread out over half a dozen hotels being shown in tiny rooms on tiny screens, who can really get all that excited?
As for their coverage, it was about as decent as you could expect. I know a lot of people are giving them flack for airing ads, especially during the press conferences, but honestly, we're lucky they even AIRED them. E3 is probably their highest (or WAS) ratings period of the year and for them NOT to air ads would be financially outrageous. I was pretty miffed that they didn't even bother to stick around for day 3, but from what I hear, there wasn't much else to see. The Stickam reactions were a nice nod to the community, but generally watered down and low quality.
For the upside for G4, Chris Gore flexed his gaming muscle with his reports, Joel Gourdin is (hopefully) slowly ousting Layla Kayleigh, Geoff Keighley returns to the network and G4 announced Electric Playground would be back.
As for next year, let's hope E3 returns to it's roots, or doesn't return at all.
