The Screen Savers

tss.jpg

The Screen Savers was TechTV's headline, nightly live show that dug into the world of technology. TSS featured daily news, in-depth reviews, modding guides, viewer talkbacks and in-studio guests. Filmed before a live audience, The Screen Savers ran from 1998 until 2005 before changing it's name to Attack of the Show.

Status
-The Screen Savers is now Attack of the Show and is no longer airing on G4.

Hosts
sarah_lane.jpg Sarah Moran (pka Sarah Lane)

Sarah first joined TSS in on TechTV as a writer and eventually moved infront of the camera doing segment work and continued until eventually becoming a permanent co-host of Attack of the Show. Her personal segments under TSS & AOTS were "Gems of the Internet" and "Damn Good Downloads" which were retired after she left the network in 2006 to marry co-host Brendon Moran. She and her new husband travelled around the word on a 12-month honeymoon before returning to the states. Currently Sarah is a producer at Revision3, an IPTV startup made up of many old TechTV hosts and also hosts the Revision3 Gazette. Her blog is at sarahlane.typepad.com.

kevin_pereira.jpg
Kevin Pereira

Kevin "Captain Immy" Pereira was previously the Production Assistant for G4TV.com and worked his way up the ranks, eventually coming to host Pulse, Arena, TSS and now AOTS. Kevin is an avid gamer but contrary to popular belief is not a dunce when it comes to technology either. Like many G4 hosts, Immy previously hosted a gaming internet radio show called "Pointless Audio" and hosts his blog at kevinpereira.com.

kevin_rose.jpg Kevin Rose

Kevin Rose was the resident hacker on TSS and did many segments on hardware mods and underground software. Kevin started as an intern on TSS and eventually rose to become an occasional host and took over for Leo Laporte after he left to focus on Call for Help. While on TSS & AOTS, Rose developed Digg, a social bookmarking site that has quickly become one of the most popular sites on the internet, which he controversially featured on AOTS but without conveying it was his own creation. He has also created his own IM program called Pownce and has been featured on the cover of Business Weekly. His blog is at kevinrose.com.

History

The Screen Savers had a long and VERY controversial history. A long running fan favorite on TechTV, TSS received a new set and a lost a few members, most notably, Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton, longtime TechTV hosts, did not make the transition from TechTV to G4. Newcomer Alex Albrecht was brought in to cohost with surviving TSS members Kevin Rose, Sarah Lane and Yoshi. However after only a few months, G4 uprooted most of TSS's staff, including Albrecht and Yoshi and began retooling the show. For nearly a month TSS was MIA, until late November when it returned with hosts Kevin Pereira, Kevin Rose, Sarah Lane and (eventually segment only) Chi-Lan. Much of the staff from the recently canceled Pulse found new jobs on TSS.

In March of 2005, The Screen Savers changed it's name to Attack of the Show and the TSS name was officially laid to rest. Many long time fans of the show claimed that The Screen Savers had changed so much since it's move from TechTV to G4 that was no longer the same show. G4, apparently agreed and not only changed the name, but also gave the set an overhaul. The show itself, however, stayed the same, with all of the hosts returning as well as most of the regular segments from G4-era TSS. TSS aired for nearly 7 years with over 2000 episodes and at least part of it continues today as Attack of the Show. The final episode of TSS aired on March 18th, 2005.

BTW!
- The Screen Savers originally had a live audience, however after the cancellation of Unscrewed, G4 did not see it viable to continue booking live audiences for only one show. However it had been speculated that G4TV.com may someday have a live audience.
- The Screen Savers was G4's only live show
- You could interact with the show by logging into the show's chat room and calling in.
- When the show was retooled in Nov '04, Chi-Lan and Kevin P were set as the two central hosts.
- The TSS set was comprised of three sections: the nook, the kitchen (or the lab) and home base. The home base (albeit not he ORIGINAL home base) survives even today on Attack of the Show.
- Chi-lan, originally a host, eventually moved back to just doing segments for the show (i.e. gadget reviews), before quitting entirely just before the show was renamed.
- Leo Laporte originally called his podcast "Revenge of the Screen Savers" but was asked by G4 to change the name, which he did, to "This Week in Tech."

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is this site about?
G4 Rewind is a website dedicated to G4, a TV network formerly based on video games & the lifestyle. G4 Rewind covers all aspects of G4, both past & present, including G4 related news, show info, videos, & more.

So are you affiliated with G4 or did you work there?
G4 Rewind is independent, but we did work with G4 to produce a G4 Rewind block based off this website, which aired on the network throughout the summer of 2008.

What about TechTV?
We're looking to expand to TechTV stuff soon, stay tuned.

What about G4techTV Canada?
We would LOVE to get some coverage of G4techTV Canada, however none of us live in Canada and thus lack the essential ingredient to cover it. If you have some G4techTV Canada footage, drop us a line at the link below.

Why are some of your show entries incomplete or nonexistent?
G4 Rewind is still very much a work in progress. We currently have only 2 people on staff so writing entire show histories takes awhile but we are working to fill in all the holes.

Do you have a clip I'm looking for?
Maybe. Post on the forums and we'll try to find it.

Can I help?
Yes, you can! If you'd like to join the crusade, post on the forums. We need contributors and all the videos you can give us. We'll even pay you to ship your VHS or DVD recordings if you can't capture the footage yourself.

How do I contact you?
Our email is info [at] g4rewind [dot] com. (We're just trying to avoid spam, so just replace [at] with @ and [dot] with ".", without the " " of course.)

Other Past TechTV Shows

While G4 was under the G4techTV moniker, many TechTV shows were carried over for a few months, but only a small amount continued in production. While in technicality they can be considered G4 shows (and are, as most of them are now property of G4 Media, Inc.), in an effort to cut down the the amount of entries (and fact that we do not have much info on them), the TechTV shows that were carried onto G4techTV (but never continued in production such as Fresh Gear, Future Fighting Machines, Nerd Nation etc.) will be listed here. Shows from TechTV that continued to be produced by G4 Media, Inc. will have their own entries (i.e. The Screen Savers, Unscrewed etc.)

Note: This page is still under construction

Fresh Gear
Future Fighting Machines

Robot Wars will have its own page as G4 continued to air new episodes of the program until its end in March 2005.

Cheat!

cheat_new.jpg

For the gamers who just can't beat that boss, Cheat! highlights codes, tips, and walkthroughs for gamers. Each episode highlights a different current release, although past episodes have focused on multiple games. Cheat! also logs all their codes on G4's website for easy access after the show has aired. Often times Cheat! will give full walkthroughs for certain games as well as ways to exploit glitches, since not all games come with codes preloaded. Cheat does not, however, cover GameShark or Action Replay codes or ways to cheat in online games.

Status
-Reruns of Cheat! are not currently airing.

Hosts
kristin_holt.jpgKristin Holt Backup singer for Lindsey Lohan, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and American Idol finalist, Kristin Holt is what you might call a jack of all trades in the entertainment biz. In addition to hosting Cheat! and occasionally hosting Attack of the Show, she is also the lead singer for the band "Stranger Days" and does hosting on Verizon's V-Cast channels.
Previous Hosts
cory_rouse.jpgCory Rouse

In addition to being the Original Cheat, Cory Rouse is also an accomplished comedian, musician and is a self-proclaimed nerd. Like Blister host Bill Sindelar, he has toured with Wayne Brady and plays the guitar in a bluegrass band called "The Dust Bowl Cavaliers." Check out his MySpace and his band's MySpace.

cheat_1.gifHistory

When it began in 2002, Cheat was hosted by "The Original Cheat", Cory Rouse. Cheat also saw it's first overhaul in the fall of 2002 when it became "Cheat! Pringle's Gamer's Guide" and saw a new intro and logo featuring 100% more potatoes and the Pringles logo. Lots of episodes were filmed on location in various arcades and venues that related to the games featured in each episode. Eventually the show returned to just being Cheat! halfway through Rouse's final season. To start off the new season in early 2005, Cheat! saw a major overhaul including the introduction of new host Kristin Holt and a new logo and look. Rouse was informed that he was being replaced and the show was moving in a different direction. G4 wanted to net an older audience, under Rouse, Cheat! viewers' average age was 12. In 2007, the average age of Cheat! viewers was reported to be over 40. The show also saw a new set, logo and a few changes to the format. Originally Cheat! detailed several games per episode, however currently the show focuses on one game per episode. The new formated ended it's run in April of 2007.

In January of 2008, X-Play was relaunched and included Cheat! segments hosted by Kristin Holt. G4 CEO Neal Tiles mentioned that Cheat was not receiving high enough ratings to validate it to continue as a standalone show, but did suggest that Cheat! specials were possible.

In the Winter of 2008, new episodes of Cheat! aired citing better ratings coming from the G4 Rewind block. The new episodes consisted mostly of clips from X-Play segments with a few new segments as well.

Quick Facts
-Cheat! was one of the 13 original shows to premiere with G4.
-Cheat! was the the only show on G4 to be branded with a sponsor in the title.
-When the new Cheat! was unveiled on G4's website, the new logo originally showed former host Cory Rouse, however Rouse never hosted an episode under the new look.
-Cheat! is the longest running series on G4 and the only survivng launch show.

G4 Specials

G4 Specials LogoAbout G4 Specials
Anything that can't fit into a show is labeled as a G4 Special. G4 Specials were often times are special behind the scenes looks at upcoming games. A semi-series of shows called "GameMakers" was, not related to the current GameMakers (previously called Icons) is included as a G4 Special which follows a game from beginning to finish, production wise. G-Phoria specials, E3, CES, AEE and Comic-Con coverage are also sometimes listed under this title.
Recurring G4 Specials

E3 Live 07 LogoE3 Live - Every year in it's existence, G4 has devoted an entire week to cover E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Typically G4's shows travel to the expo center to do on-location reports, interviews and demos. G4's headline shows (now AOTS and X-Play) usually air their episodes for that week live on the show floor. Starting in 2007, G4 begin airing Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony's entire press conferences live. In the past, G4 has also hosted round table discussion shows with various industry experts and G4 hosts talking about their E3 expectations.
CES LogoCES Live - Previously covered by TechTV, G4 has recently begun expanding it's coverage of the Consumer Electronics Show. Attack of the Show now does two live days from the show floor with tech demos and interviews.
Comic Con LogoComic-Con Live - G4 began covering the annual Comic-Con in San Diego in 2006. Typically Attack of the Show is live from the floor and features interviews with celebrities, artists and fans.
AEE LogoAEE - Since CES and the Adult Entertainment Expo are typically around the same time, G4 usually, for some reason, pairs the two together and covers both. AEE coverage is typically pre-recorded and later at night due to it's adult content. Attack of the Show covers porn starts, adult toys and other various porn-related news during the special.
G-Phoria 04 LogoG-Phoria - Formerly a high-budget award show featuring celebrities and a live audience, G-Phoria has dropped the glamor and scaled back in recent years, to the point of being a special yearly episode of X-Play. Later G-Phorias have focused more on the games and have took on political themes as viewers vote on all the winners. Several G-Phorias in the past were hosted by the infamous Hal Sparks, who also hosted Video Game Vixens. There was also a short series called "The Road to G-Phoria" which were round table discussion shows about G-Phoria nominees.
Other Specials

GameMakers - Not to be confused with show "Icons" that was renamed "GameMakers," the GameMakers G4 Specials were half hour features that followed the development of a game's production. Typically the special would be shown around the time the featured game was released to consumers. Some episodes have even been packaged with video games, such as FASA's MechAssault 2 on Xbox.
Free Stuff logoFree Stuff - Free Stuff was a summer/winter special hosted by Morgan Webb and Kevin Pereira that reviewed new tech products and games, then gave them away by random drawing to viewers who entered in a code on the website given by "Lloyd the Chimp" during commercial breaks. Free Stuff had a limit run during the summer of 2007 and was revived for a Christmas Special later in the year.

Although billed as a live show, some viewers questioned whether or not some scenes were pre-recorded, or the entire show itself, as G4 supposedly aired two live versions of the show, one for each coast. It was reported that the west coast airing was simply a recording of the original east coast airing with the codes and winner's names replaced, however this was never confirmed. The hosts also did not ever mention winners by name, rather, their names were simply displayed on screen near the end of the program. G4 attributed this the show being on a 7 second delay.

Icons

icons.jpg

About Icons

Icons was one of G4's original launch series and takes a documentary style look at gaming legends and the people behind them. Icons detailed the histories of Pac-Man, Yuji Naka, EA, Apple, Peter Molyneux, Dreamcast and more. Adding to the documentary are contributors from around the gaming industry who have worked with or merely admired the Icons.

Later, the show was revamped to take the same (albiet more "underground") documentary style look at pop-culture producers, directors, artists and more. The show dropped all gaming content and all the previous game-related episodes of Icons were renamed "GameMakers."

Hosts

Little was known about Icon's original narrator, Jack Steele. G4's site lists that he lives in the underwater city of Atlantis. Icons also has regular contributions from Geoff Keighley and Epic Games' Cliffy B, as well as others related specifically to each episode's content.

History

Icons, by large and far, was hearlded as G4's best show, due to it's behind the scenes look at classic and noteworthy games and game makers. When the show was revamped shortly after the TechTV merger, there was much outcry from fans to no avail. The show began running episodes on emerging artists and film makers such as J.J. Abrams and Eli Roth, looking for a more edgy wider audience. The show only lasted one season under it's new format and ended in March of 2007.

Every previous episode of Icons that focused on games was renamed "GameMakers" and their opening intros changed to fit the new name. GameMakers was treated as if it had always been a seperate show, but never had any new episodes. GameMakers is occasionally still aired in early mornings and was featured during the G4 Rewind block in the summer of 2008.

BTW!
- Icons was one of the original 13 series that debuted with G4
- Icons had not regular host, every episode was narrated by voice overs
- Filter experienced a similar makeover as Icons when it was revamped to feature pop-culture content
- Parts of Icons can been seen on the Dead or Alive Ultimate Collection (Xbox) disc and on the Mega Man Collection (GameCube) disc.
